Metal Siding Panel Profiles: Concealed vs Exposed Fastener

Metal siding has quietly become one of the most flexible materials on a building. The same coil that goes on the roof can wrap a wall, and the right profile can read as crisp architectural cladding or rugged industrial skin depending on how it is formed. This guide covers the metal siding panel profiles we fabricate, the difference between concealed and exposed fastener systems, and how the edge metal ties the whole envelope together.

Concealed fastener vs exposed fastener

The first fork on any siding job is how the panel attaches, because it sets the look, the price, and the weather performance.

Concealed fastener panels hide their screws under the next panel or behind a clip, the same idea as standing seam on a roof. The wall reads as a clean, continuous surface with no visible fastener lines. Concealed fastener is the architectural choice: flush-wall systems, board-and-batten, and reveal panels all fall here. It costs more and installs more carefully, and it is what most designers want on a visible facade.

Exposed fastener panels screw straight through the face into the structure, with the fastener heads visible in a regular pattern, usually with a colored gasketed washer. Corrugated and ribbed panels are the classic exposed-fastener look. It is faster and cheaper to install, holds up well, and is the workhorse for industrial, agricultural, and back-of-house walls where the look is secondary to cost and coverage.

Neither is “better.” They solve different problems. A lot of buildings use both: concealed fastener on the street-facing walls, exposed fastener where nobody is looking.

Common metal siding panel profiles

Here are the profiles that come up most often, grouped by the look they create.

  • Flush-wall (concealed fastener). Tight, modern, near-flat panels with a small reveal between them. The cleanest architectural wall look.
  • Board-and-batten (concealed fastener). Raised vertical battens at intervals, giving a strong shadow line and a contemporary read on a vertical wall. Popular on modern residential and mixed-use facades.
  • Reveal and plank panels (concealed fastener). Horizontal or vertical planks with a defined reveal, often used to mimic a wood-plank rhythm in metal.
  • Corrugated (exposed fastener). The wavy classic. Durable, economical, and increasingly used on purpose for a deliberate industrial look.
  • Ribbed and R-panel (exposed fastener). Trapezoidal ribs at regular spacing. The standard for warehouses, agricultural buildings, and commercial back walls.
  • Soffit panels. Vented or solid panels for the underside of eaves and overhangs, color-matched to the wall and fascia.

We fabricate Drexel Metals and Sheffield Metals wall profiles in the same Galvalume steel and aluminum substrates as the roofing line, finished in the same 70% PVDF coating family. That is the quiet advantage of running the wall and the roof through one shop: they actually match.

The envelope only works if the edges do

Siding and roofing get the attention, but the edge metal is what makes the whole thing watertight and finished. Edge metal is the perimeter trim that caps, closes, and drains the building, and it is where mismatched suppliers show up most. Three slightly different whites on the panel, the coping, and the fascia will be obvious from the street.

The edge metal pieces we fabricate include:

  • Coping. The cap on top of a parapet wall, shedding water to one side. The most common edge metal on a flat-roof commercial building.
  • Fascia. The vertical face that trims the roof edge, often paired with a gravel stop.
  • Gravel stop. Holds the roofing membrane edge and provides a clean drip line.
  • Gutters and downspouts. Formed to the run and color-matched to the panels.
  • Counter flashing, drip edge, rake and eave trim. The smaller pieces that close every transition.

Because we fabricate all of it from the same finished coil as the wall and roof panels, the coping, fascia, and siding line up across the building instead of arriving in three near-matches.

ES-1 and why it matters on low-slope roofs

If your project is a low-slope commercial roof, you will likely run into ES-1. ANSI/SPRI ES-1 is the standard that governs the wind resistance of edge metal, coping, and fascia on low-slope roofs, and it is referenced by the building code. In plain terms: the edge metal has to be designed and fabricated to stay attached when the wind tries to peel it off, because a failed edge is where a lot of roofs start to come apart in a storm.

We fabricate ES-1 tested perimeter profiles for projects where the spec or the code official calls for them. If your job needs a tested edge, say so up front and we will confirm we can supply it before anything is cut.

How to spec a siding and edge package

The cleanest way to order is to treat the wall and the edge as one package so everything matches. Send:

  1. Profile for the wall (flush-wall, board-and-batten, corrugated, and so on), or the look you want and let us recommend.
  2. Concealed or exposed fastener, if you have a preference.
  3. Substrate, gauge or thickness, finish, and color, ideally matched to the roof.
  4. Edge metal needs: coping, fascia, gravel stop, gutters, and whether ES-1 is required.
  5. Linear footage and quantities, plus the jobsite for a delivery price.

Order the wall and the edge together and the whole envelope comes off the same coil, color-matched, ready to install as one system.

The short version

Concealed fastener for a clean architectural wall, exposed fastener for economical industrial coverage, and often both on the same building. Match the substrate and finish to the roof, order the coping and fascia with the panels, and check whether the roof needs an ES-1 edge. Get those right and the building reads as one piece instead of a collection of parts.
